The Museum “Meteorological station of Simbirsk" was opened in September 1998. It is the only Museum in Russia of scientific meteorological station, which presents a single complex station with tools and historical documents. The Museum is located in the memorial building, the house of Alexander Petrovich Yazykov on Pokrovskaya street (now Tolstoy, 67), where in 1876, at the initiative of the doctor Pavel Mikhailovich Kozakevich there opened the first meteorological station in Simbirsk.
The Museum exposition tells about the history of meteorological observations in Russia and Simbirsk, about outstanding climate scientists. A unique collection of books on medicine and meteorology, instructions for weather stations, and the collection of meteorological instruments of the nineteenth century is collected here, there is the meteorological station, where now observations and lessons in meteorology are conducted,. Looking through the tables of meteorological observations that were supposedly filled out by a doctor PM by Kozakevich, you can plunge into the past - in the history of our region. What was the weather then? What was the significance of weather observations at that time and now? What unusual natural phenomena were observed in Simbirsk more than 100 years ago? Certainly, it is interesting to know for all of us.
After an extensive reorganization of the Museum in 2011, a new exhibition included items added to the collections of the Museum-reserve "the birthplace of V.I. Lenin" in the last 10 years. For the first time by means of the Museum it is told about the activities of Peter the Great, M.V. Lomonosov, Mendeleev in the formation and development of national meteorological science. More detailed the scientific work of academician G.I. Vild, a prominent climatologist and geographer Aiguablava is represented. For visitors who thoroughly study the history and science there is an opportunity to read the works of scientists, meteorologists, represented in the exhibition, with the help of specially made interactive models of the fund. An important addition is the section of historical-documentary exhibition, revealing with the help of the archival documents the work of the meteorological stations of Simbirsk province in the late XIX - early XX centuries. Collection of meteorological instruments in the museum was enriched by station thermographs and hygrometers, as well as household thermometers and barometers. In the lecture hall the topic of weather continues with the exposure "Unusual celestial phenomena". Pictures of clouds, lightning, rainbow, sunset, Aurora, are presented in the form of large format printing on glass. New video equipment allows to show videos and presentations on a variety of museum topics.
In a separate hall of the Museum since 2001 is a mini-planetarium, which shows the starry sky, the planets, the Galaxy, celestial phenomena on the dome,. The planetarium at the Museum "Meteorological station of Simbirsk" is the only planetarium in the Ulyanovsk region. It is a member of the Association of planetariums of Russia (APR), the International society of planetariums (IPS).
In the exposition of the planetarium the globes of the Earth, moon, Mars, starry sky, talluri, the model of the planetary system, mobile star map of the sky, the optic tube, the telescope are presented. The interiors of the star chamber are decorated with large photographs of nebulae and star clusters, images of the zodiacal constellations from the atlas of the Polish astronomer of the seventeenth century Jan Geveliya. The unique exhibit of the planetarium is Sikhote-Alin iron meteorite weighing about 6.5 kg
